Clarity

Diamond clarity refers to the absence of naturally occurring inclusions within the stone or blemishes on the surface. The grading of a diamond’s clarity depends on the size, colour and location of any inclusion or blemish, and is assessed by 10 x magnification. Larger and more visible inclusions lessen the value of the stone.

Grading a Diamond

Inclusions and blemishes can be very difficult to locate by the untrained eye but we’ll help to guide your choice. When grading a diamond, the size of the inclusion or blemish along with their location, colour, type and number are taken into account. A diamond is never perfectly pure, but as its purity increases, its clarity will. Flawless diamonds are very rare and command the highest prices.

Eye-clean

Diamonds graded VS2 and above are considered eye-clean, which means that any imperfections will not be visible to the naked eye. Grades SI1 and below are non-eye-clean, which means inclusions may be visible without magnification. Although a VS1 and an SI2 diamond may look the same, they differ in quality.

Nature's Fingerprints

Feathers and crystals are the most common forms of inclusions and these internal features are known as nature’s fingerprints.

Seek Advice

Diamond inclusions and blemishes are imperfections and the size, colour, location, number and visiblity are all taken into account when grading. These may include crystals or minerals, feathers or small cracks, knots, needles, pinpoints and twinning wisps.
However, appraising a stone on its individual merits is always worthwhile as the location of any inclusion is important. We recommend seeking advice on all diamond purchases.
