The Gold Anchor Hallmark: A Symbol of Quality & Craftsmanship

We are committed to creating fine gold jewellery that meets the highest standards of quality and authenticity. The gold anchor hallmark is one of the most recognised symbols in British hallmarking, signifying that a piece has been assayed and certified by the Birmingham Assay Office.

What is the Gold Anchor Hallmark?

The gold anchor hallmark is a stamp applied to gold jewellery and bullion to verify its purity and origin. It confirms that the metal has been independently tested to meet UK legal standards. The anchor symbol specifically represents the Birmingham Assay Office, one of the four official UK Assay Offices responsible for hallmarking precious metals.

Understanding the Gold Assay Hallmarks

Every UK gold hallmark consists of three key elements:
The Anchor Symbol – Indicates that the gold was tested and certified at the Birmingham Assay Office.
The Fineness Mark – Displays the purity of gold in parts per thousand, such as:

  • 375 – 9ct gold (37.5% pure gold)
  • 585 – 14ct gold (58.5% pure gold)
  • 750 – 18ct gold (75% pure gold)
  • 916 – 22ct gold (91.6% pure gold)
  • 999 – 24ct gold (99.9% pure gold)
  • The Sponsor’s Mark – Identifies the jeweller or manufacturer who submitted the piece for hallmarking.

Why is the Gold Anchor Hallmark Important?

A gold anchor hallmark guarantees that your jewellery meets strict UK regulations for gold purity, offering confidence and transparency when purchasing fine jewellery. It is a mark of trust, ensuring that your gold piece is authentic and of high quality.
