Understanding Carats: A Guide to Gold & Diamonds

The term carats is commonly used in jewellery, but it has different meanings depending on whether you are referring to gold or gemstones. Understanding carats will help you make informed decisions when purchasing fine jewellery.

Carats in Gold

When referring to gold, carats (ct) indicate purity. Pure gold is 24 carats (24ct), but it is often mixed with other metals for durability.

The most common gold carats are:

  • 24ct Gold – 99.9% pure gold, soft and rich in colour.
  • 18ct Gold – 75% gold, mixed with alloys for strength and ideal for fine jewellery.
  • 14ct Gold – 58.5% gold, offering a good balance of durability and value.
  • 9ct Gold – 37.5% gold, highly durable and more affordable.

Higher carat gold is richer in colour but softer, while lower carat gold is harder and more resistant to wear.

Carats in Diamonds & Gemstones

For diamonds and other gemstones, carats (ct) measure weight rather than purity. One carat equals 0.2 grams. Larger carat stones are rarer and more valuable, but carat weight is just one factor in a gem’s beauty – cut, colour, and clarity also play a role.

  • 1ct Diamond – A classic choice for engagement rings.
  • 0.50ct (½ carat) – A delicate yet striking size.
  • 2ct+ Diamonds – A statement piece, highly sought after.
